Community Solar Club

Local energy >> Lower bills >> No upfront cost

The Neighbourhood Forum is launching a Community Energy Company – a not-for-profit cooperative to bring clean, low-cost energy to local people through solar power. We’re currently carrying out a government-funded feasibility study, and we’d love to hear what you think….

What's the idea?

We want to install solar panels on your roof - at no upfront cost to you. You simply buy the green electricity they generate at a cheaper rate than your current supplier.
Profits from the scheme go back into local community projects- not corporate shareholders.

How does it work?

We install solar panels on your property for free
You pay for the electricity you use from the panels at a lower rate than you’re currently paying
You still use your regular supplier for extra energy when needed
You can choose to buy the system later if you want
Any excess electricity is sold by the Community Energy Company

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Community Solar Club?
It’s a not-for-profit local scheme where residents can have solar panels installed on their homes with no upfront cost and buy the electricity they generate at a cheaper rate than their current supplier.

Do I need to own my home to take part?
Yes, ideally. However, if you rent and your landlord is supportive, you may still be eligible. Let us know in the form and we’ll explore the options.

Is there any cost to sign up?
No. At this stage, we’re just gathering interest. If the project goes ahead and you choose to join, you’ll only pay for the electricity you use – at a lower rate than normal.

Who pays for the solar panels?
The Community Energy Company will fund the installation. You don’t pay anything up front.

How do I save money?
You’ll pay the Community Energy Company a discounted rate for the solar electricity you use during the day. This could significantly reduce your electricity bill.

What happens to the energy I don’t use?
Any unused electricity will be exported to the grid by the Community Energy Company. This income helps cover the cost of the scheme.

Can I buy the system later?
Yes. If you decide you’d like to own the solar system in future, you’ll have the option to buy it at a fair, pro rata cost.

Will I still need my current energy supplier?
Yes. You’ll still need your usual supplier for times when the solar panels aren’t generating – like at night or during very cloudy weather.
