Stanton Hill Bus Service Improvement Plan
Proposal
The East Midlands Mayor has stated that: The East Midlands will benefit from the largest transport investment in a generation, which will be used to deliver a modern, reliable, and integrated transport system across the region, with a particular focus on reducing congestion and improving connectivity between areas that have little or no transport provision at all.
With the support of the Neighbourhood Forum a group of local residents have formed the Stanton Hill Bus Service Improvement Group and have proposed the following specific measures to greatly improve the ‘connectivity’ of Stanton Hill, as well as Skegby and Teversal.
- Retain the existing (improved) 141 service with it being hourly, reliable and keeping to schedule, and to operate on weekends, bank holidays and evenings.
- Modify the 141 route to improve access, e.g. include Fackley Way and new builds
- Bring back an hourly service through Teversal to replace the withdrawn Spira service which will, together with the 141, provide a half hourly service to Stanton Hill. This will also reinstate a bus service on Wild Hill.
- Provide a community transport service between Stanton Hill, Skegby, Teversal and Huthwaite so that patients can access all the relevant GP services provided at the Brierley Park Medical Group facilities in both Huthwaite and Healdswood.
- Improve bus stop safety, especially at sites with no lay-by and high speed traffic, and also effective communication of reliable information by the bus company.

Statement of Need
The East Midlands Mayor has stated that: The East Midlands will benefit from the largest transport investment in a generation, which will be used to deliver a modern, reliable, and integrated transport system across the region, with a particular focus on reducing congestion and improving connectivity between areas that have little or no transport provision at all.
Stanton Hill (NG17) is implementing a Community Investment Plan with a 10-year programme of priorities and interventions. It has been developed in partnership by the community and Ashfield District Council, informed by extensive engagement with residents. The purpose of this Plan is to make Stanton Hill a more attractive and prosperous place, while improving wellbeing and engagement for residents.
Stanton Hill faces deep-rooted community challenges, with deprivation, crime, and poor health undermining community wellbeing. The area north of High Street is among the top 10% most deprived areas in England, while the High Street itself falls within the top 20%. Only 22.5% of residents hold qualifications at Level 4 or higher (approximately degree level), significantly below the national average of 33.9%, limiting access to better job opportunities. Poor public transport access makes it difficult to access work and other services.
Health: The Skegby surgery at Healdswood s now part of the Brierley General Practice, which is a significant improvement but there is a major constraint since it is difficult to provide some specialist services at both sites and there is no effective public transport provision between them.
A Key objective of the Community Investment Plan is Connected Stanton Hill, with the objective of improving accessibility/connections for residents, visitors and tourists. There is a major opportunity to attract more people - existing and future residents, and visitors - into the High Street. Doing so will require addressing connectivity challenges that hamper access to and from the area. This will also stimulate economic growth by restoring access to Chesterfield and North Derbyshire. Specific potential benefits will be gained from:
Improving Bus Services
Local bus services are extremely poor with hourly bus services from Stanton Hill running from 6:30am - 5:30pm, and no bus services on Sundays. This service is also very slow - over 1.5 hours from Nottingham to Stanton Hill – and the timetable does not match up well with connections via onward buses. Bus service provision transitioning to EMCCA control creates an opportunity for an improved service that gives residents greater access to key nearby centres, as well as making it easier for people to visit Stanton Hill.
Improved Health
The Skegby surgery is now part of the Brierley General Practice, which is a significant improvement but there is a major constraint since it is difficult to provide some specialist services at both sites and there is no effective public transport provision between them. With an aging population there is an urgent need for public transport for those no longer able to drive.
We believe that the way forward is by formulating specific realistic proposals based on local knowledge and working with our Neighbourhood Forum, Ashfield District Council, Nottinghamshire County Council, Nottinghamshire NHS Integrated Care Board and the EMCCA Transport Committee to participate in the consultation on the forthcoming EMCCA Transport and Bus Service Improvement Plans.
In this way we hope and believe that the Mayor’s vision for ‘a modern, reliable, and integrated transport system’ will become a reality.
